too bad but for money or fun we r spoilng our next generation....Alok

Since most pubs, discs, hotels, cinemas are owned by politicians, bureacrats and mafias they r running up to 4 am too. Multinationals pay well but make execs slogg till midnight. Many spoilt teens for fun have regular late nights. But it hurts their health.

Sins of late nights:

  1.  Some start taking alcohol, drugs and other atleast have excess of Tea/ cofee .All harmful.
  2. Late nighters be in office or clubs only get unhealthy food ( they wont get traditional Thali rich in wholesome food) .
  3. All this results in high diabetes, high BP. lower IQ, no general knowledge ( as during day they dont see / intract with world realities ) and nights r out.
  4. Bad family life. Bad parentship. Bad relations with spouse.

From G D Birla to Anil Ambani wake up early and have long brisk walk and then leave office in time. ( I am not giving examples of saints or less successful).

Newspaprs should give people like G D Birla type peoples info on page 3 . But since the reporters themselves are low grade people they dont shre responsibility towards teenagers, Sachin, Shaharukh , Rakhi may be paying them.

Govt, courts, and unions should enforce laws and ensure that latenights are stopped.

All spouses and children must insist on their butter winner that they dont want more luxuries and want papa's health and company and insist he is back home by 7 pm on most days.........Alok

Insomniac men more likely to die early

Men suffering from sleep deprivation are more likely to die prematurely than those who regularly get a good night's sleep.

Vegetables, fruits lower lung cancer risk

A diverse diet of vegetables may decrease a personĂ¢?Ts chances of getting lung cancer, and a variety of fruits and vegetables may lower the risk of squamous cell lung cancer, especially among smokers.

Depression: The Facts vs the Myths

Depression: The Facts vs the Myths

DoctorNDTV

"It's all in your head. Only women get depressed. If you have depression, you're stuck with it for life." These are nothing but myths related to depression. The feature debunks the common myths related to depression.

1. Myth
: Depression is a sign of weakness.

Fact: No, As with many diseases, depression is caused by a combination of genetic factors and exposure to a stressful life event.

2. Myth: Most people can 'snap out' of a depressed state. There is no need to take treatment.

Fact: Depression is a serious health condition that usually requires treatment with medication, counseling o a combination of both.

3. Myth: Most patients only need medication for depression for a short period of time.

Fact: Even though you may be feeling better, taking medication for too short a time can lead to the return of your depression symptoms.

4. Myth: If antidepressant medications have not started working out, they'll never work.

Fact:
Antidepressant medications usually take two or four weeks to start working. So, it will take some time for you to notice their effects.

5. Myth: Depression is a normal part of getting older.

Fact:
Depression is not a normal part of aging, but seniors do generally experience more of the events that can trigger depression: loss of family and friends, ill health, isolation and financial worries.

6. Myth: Depression only affects women.

Fact: Although women report being affected by depression twice as much as men, depression certainly affects men as well. Often, clinical depression is underreported in men.

7. Myth: Depression is no different from getting the "blues".

Fact: The blues only last a day or two. Depression, on the other hand, can last a lifetime, and the illness is much more pervasive and disabling.

Walking boosts brain function....Doctor NDTV

Walking boosts brain function

Neuroscience,
August 2010

Even moderate exercise - like walking - can enhance the connectivity of important brain circuits, combat declines in brain function associated with aging and increase performance on cognitive tasks.

To look into the association between physical activity and quality of life among older adults, researchers followed 65 Americans, aged 59 to 80 years, who joined a walking group or stretching and toning group for a year. All of the participants were sedentary before the study, reporting less than two episodes of physical activity lasting 30 minutes or more in the previous six months. The researchers also measured brain activity in 32 younger (18- to 35-year-old) adults. Rather than focusing on specific brain structures, the study looked at activity in brain regions that function together as networks.

Almost nothing in the brain gets done by one area - it's more of a circuit. These networks can become more or less connected. In general, as we get older, they become less connected. Neuroscientists have identified several distinct brain circuits. Perhaps the most intriguing is the default mode network (DMN), which dominates brain activity when a person is least engaged with the outside world - either passively observing something or simply daydreaming.

The researchers in the current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine whether aerobic activity increased connectivity in the DMN or other brain networks. The researchers measured participants' brain connectivity and performance on cognitive tasks at the beginning of the study, at six months and after a year of either walking or toning and stretching.
At the end of the year, DMN connectivity was significantly improved in the brains of the older walkers, but not in the stretching and toning group. The walkers also had increased connectivity in parts of another brain circuit (the fronto-executive network, which aids in the performance of complex tasks) and they did significantly better on cognitive tests than their toning and stretching peers.

This study shows that there is an alarming rate of physical inactivity among older adults, particularly those aging with a disability and that there is strong evidence for the beneficial effects of physical activity on impairment, function, and health-related aspects of quality of life among older adults.

Nagpur mental hospital patient returns as a doc

Nagpur mental hospital patient returns as a doc

Shishir Arya | TNN

Nagpur: She spent over two harrowing months in a mental hospital grappling with the feeling of having been abandoned and sharing a dormitory with other patients, many of them destitutes. The same hospital is now her workplace.
For Dr Raksha Shah (name changed), it was a long and different journey
In her thirties now, Dr Shah has been appointed medical officer at Regional Mental Hospital, Nagpur, after being discharged. The government-run hospital absorbed its own patient as a full-time employee to prove that patients cured of mental illness could be rehabilitated. She is working for six months now and her boss says she is doing fine.
Every day, Dr Shah examines 60-70 patients in the OPD. Having undergone the trauma herself she understands their plight better. A broken marriage and a series of events had taken her there.
She had to be treated for a couple of months. At the time, doctors found her intelligent. Her being a qualified medical practitioner led to the idea of accommodating her in the hospital itself. She did her MBBS from Topiwala Medical College and Nair Hospital, Mumbai, before her marriage 13 years ago. Now a confident Dr Shah wants to forget the past. She avoids answering questions about how things went wrong. "A particular situation makes one react like that. I had a fight with someone and my parents thought I needed treatment. I am fine now,'' she says. As she examines the patients, she says, "They can be easily cured if proper medication is taken and the family takes enough care. Their kin should help shed the stigma they carry,'' she says. She now tells her patients not to react to others' behaviour and not to underestimate themselves because of their condition.
Asked how she felt during the treatment, Shah says, "Nothing much. I could adjust with other patients. Being a doctor I was used to being with people in such conditions.'' She now plans to complete her postgraduation in paediatrics that would allow her to begin practising as a child specialist.

Dr Raksha Shah (name changed) underwent therapy at a mental hospital in Nagpur after a broken marriage

During the treatment, doctors found her to be intelligent and her being an MBBS gave them an idea

Shah is back at the hospital after discharge, this time appointed as a medical officer and is doing well

In Praise Of Ghee

Alok adds: I consume pure ghee( not vegetable ghee/ dalda) regularly at the age of 55 and so is my father at the age of 87.None of us have BP / diabetes so far.My dadaji ( grand pa) would keep can of Ghee on his table while having meals and was regular excess user of Ghee.He lived till the age of 99 and did not have BP/ diabetes.I am over weight but my father is slim and my grandfather, my mother  were  slim.I dont blame ghee for my weight. My over weight is due to less hours of active routine. I am more glued to phones, computers, visitors etc .My family members were physically active for 6 to 8 hrs minimum( 20 min. of walk is a hoax preaching by docs and others). We always had home made ghee, rabdi, sweets, namkeen, achar, papad, Ice cream till my mother used to be incharge of kitchen. Now a days no house wife wants to work and u get everything readymade ( cooked with adultrated medium, masalas etc in unhyginic conditions) and you find these house wives with sedentry lifestyle having several ailments. I can reason rise in cases of diabetes and BP to following reasons:
  1. lifestyle
  2. less physicallly active life
  3. stress
  4. late nights
  5. junk foods ( and not ghee)
  6. less consumption of fibreous food
  7. less consumption of whole grains (kaddhanya) like chana, mong, moth, methi, val etc..
  8. more consumption of maida,fine flour , bread,namkeen,pizza,cheese,etc

There's a four-letter word that comes instantly to my mind when people complain of lifestyle-related problems—diabetes, hypertension, a bad back, high cholesterol. Ghee. You read right, ghee. Ghee—clarified of impurities, strengthened with all the essential fatty acids—is a miracle worker. It increases the strength of our joints, improves the texture of our skin, hair and nails, works wonders for our insulin sensitivity, helps to burn fat efficiently and keeps the brain alert. Difficult to believe? Then ask yourself why we tend to believe low-fat fibre-enriched biscuits, fortified with calcium and iron, are good for us. (Baseless theory, by the way.) Are we turning out to be a generation that only believes in things packaged well? Despite its negative image, ghee is good fat. We need the type of fat it provides for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins like A and E. Both work as antioxidants and are rich in anti-ageing properties—and also help to keep our immunity levels sky high. The fatty acids in ghee also provide strength and hydration to our overworked joints, like those of the lower back and the knee, and help to keep our muscles agile and strong. Of course, like with all good things, overdoing ghee backfires. You should only add two teaspoons of it to your daily diet. Does the thought of that make you gag? Consider this. Gram to gram, a low-fat biscuit has more fat than two teaspoons of ghee. In terms of quality, ghee wins hands down over that biscuit. Above all, nothing can compare with the taste of fresh hot ghee on dal, chawal or garam rotis—or even sauted mushrooms. Did I mention that you need to exercise regularly to reap the benefits of ghee?..........Laxmikant Singrodia
