Quick Fixes for Common Ailments affecting women

Expert inputs by Namita Jain, clinical and fitness expert: TOI

Fed up with the recurring headache, the sudden stiff neck or the irksome lower back issue? iDiva gives you quick, simple methods to cure the five most common ailments among working women.

Condition: Headache
Cause: Heat or stress
Remedy: One of the most common complaints, a headache is often brought on by heat or the blazing sun. It can be treated by drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated by consuming vegetables and fruits like cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, etc. If possible, lie down in a dark room, shut your eyes, cover your head with a cold towel and simply relax. Of course, if the headache persists, consult a doctor.

Condition: Stiff neck
Cause: Tight neck muscles or stress
Remedy: Perform light stretching exercises for your neck. Gently tilt your head to one side, so that your ear touches the shoulder. Straighten your neck and repeat it for the other side. You can also turn your head to the side, as if looking over your shoulder. Do not try to rotate your head, as this can cause additional strain on your neck. However, you can rotate your shoulders to loosen those muscles. Before going to bed, apply a muscle relaxant ointment, such as Iodex.

Condition: Lower back pain
Cause: Stiffness
Remedy: Often, physical discomfort in the lower back is caused by stiff muscles. To relieve the pain, lie down on the floor with your knees bent. Raise your leg and bring your thigh close to your stomach. Stretch in this manner one leg at a time and then both together. Lower back pain can be symptomatic of something more serious, so if you continue to face chronic pain, consult a specialist.

Condition: Sore feet
Cause: Prolonged periods of standing or walking
Remedy: Soothe your feet by soaking them in warm saline water. Enclosed feet tend to get stiff from improper blood circulation. So rest your feet and remove your shoes to enhance circulation. Exercise your feet in a point and flex motion. You can also rotate them in inward and outward directions. Try this with both your feet simultaneously.

Condition: Tired eyes
Cause: Extended use of computer, pollution or inadequate sleep
Remedy: One of the simplest cures is to splash your eyes with cold water as often as 10-15 times a day. This not only reduces tiredness, but also relaxes the eyes, leaving them feeling refreshed. Another option is to briskly rub your palms together and place them over your eyes. The heat generated through this transfers onto your eyes, soothing them. It is also advisable to take short breaks while working in front of the computer.

LONDON: A romantic weekend away is often just the thing to revive a flagging relationship. But, beware – it could actually kill you, researchers now say.

A new study, by Tufts and Harvard universities, has found that having sex occasionally puts one at more than twice the risk of suffering a heart attack – in fact, the risk is significantly higher for those unused to exerting themselves on a regular basis, the Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

For their study, the researchers reviewed the results of a number of previous researches. They discovered that "episodic activity" was associated with more than a two and a half times increased risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death (SCD).

However, regularly indulging in exercise, including sex, offset the increased risk by almost half for each additional time per week it's carried out, according to the researchers. "Regular physical activity has been identified as strongly associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and related mortality," the researchers wrote
in the the JAMA journal. "Despite the well-established benefits of regular physical activity, anecdotal evidence has suggested that physical activity, as well as other acute exposures, such as sexual activity and psychological stress, can act as triggers of acute cardiac events," they added.

In fact, for their study, the researchers looked at more than 14 researches looking at what caused heart attacks and found that a small but significant number happened during physical and sexual activity.

They found all kinds of physical activity accounted for three and a half times increased risk and sex 2.7 times. The researchers said that most importantly, the risks could be modified by "habitual physical activity" and that those who indulged regularly were much less likely to have a heart attack triggered by sex.

Jessica Paulus, who worked on the study, said the risk is fairly high as such studies go. But the period of increased risk is brief. "These elevated risks are only for a short duration of time (1 to 2 hours) during and after the physical or sexual activity," she said.

SO LEARN TAI CHI and avoid falling and avoid hip bone fractures at old age...Alok

Tai chi secret to a happy old age:
Want to know what's the key to a happy old age? It's Tai chi, a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial arts form which enhances balance and body awareness via slow graceful and precise body movements, say researchers. A new study, led by the University of California, has revealed that the series of exercises once a week can lift depression, raise energy levels and even improve the memory of aged people. The over-65s are six times more likely to suffer from depression than the general population.

Considering Suicide - read this first.

If you are feeling suicidal now, please stop long enough to read this. It will only take about five minutes. I do not want to talk you out of your bad feelings. I am not a therapist or other mental health professional - only someone who knows what it is like to be in pain.

I don't know who you are, or why you are reading this page. I only know that for the moment, you're reading it, and that is good. I can assume that you are here because you are troubled and considering ending your life. If it were possible, I would prefer to be there with you at this moment, to sit with you and talk, face to face and heart to heart. But since that is not possible, we will have to make do with this.

I have known a lot of people who have wanted to kill themselves, so I have some small idea of what you might be feeling. I know that you might not be up to reading a long book, so I am going to keep this short. While we are together here for the next five minutes, I have five simple, practical things I would like to share with you. I won't argue with you about whether you should kill yourself. But I assume that if you are thinking about it, you feel pretty bad.

Well, you're still reading, and that's very good. I'd like to ask you to stay with me for the rest of this page. I hope it means that you're at least a tiny bit unsure, somewhere deep inside, about whether or not you really will end your life. Often people feel that, even in the deepest darkness of despair. Being unsure about dying is okay and normal. The fact that you are still alive at this minute means you are still a little bit unsure. It means that even while you want to die, at the same time some part of you still wants to live. So let's hang on to that, and keep going for a few more minutes.

Start by considering this statement:

Suicide is not chosen; it happens
when pain exceeds
resources for coping with pain.

That's all it's about. You are not a bad person, or crazy, or weak, or flawed, because you feel suicidal. It doesn't even mean that you really want to die - it only means that you have more pain than you can cope with right now. If I start piling weights on your shoulders, you will eventually collapse if I add enough weights... no matter how much you want to remain standing. Willpower has nothing to do with it. Of course you would cheer yourself up, if you could.

Don't accept it if someone tells you, "That's not enough to be suicidal about." There are many kinds of pain that may lead to suicide. Whether or not the pain is bearable may differ from person to person. What might be bearable to someone else, may not be bearable to you. The point at which the pain becomes unbearable depends on what kinds of coping resources you have. Individuals vary greatly in their capacity to withstand pain.

When pain exceeds pain-coping resources, suicidal feelings are the result. Suicide is neither wrong nor right; it is not a defect of character; it is morally neutral. It is simply an imbalance of pain versus coping resources.

You can survive suicidal feelings if you do either of two things: (1) find a way to reduce your pain, or (2) find a way to increase your coping resources. Both are possible.

Now I want to tell you five things to think about.

1

You need to hear that people do get through this -- even people who feel as badly as you are feeling now. Statistically, there is a very good chance that you are going to live. I hope that this information gives you some sense of hope.

2

Give yourself some distance. Say to yourself, "I will wait 24 hours before I do anything." Or a week. Remember that feelings and actions are two different things - just because you feel like killing yourself, doesn't mean that you have to actually do it right this minute. Put some distance between your suicidal feelings and suicidal action. Even if it's just 24 hours. You have already done it for 5 minutes, just by reading this page. You can do it for another 5 minutes by continuing to read this page. Keep going, and realize that while you still feel suicidal, you are not, at this moment, acting on it. That is very encouraging to me, and I hope it is to you.

3

People often turn to suicide because they are seeking relief from pain. Remember that relief is a feeling. And you have to be alive to feel it. You will not feel the relief you so desperately seek, if you are dead.

4

Some people will react badly to your suicidal feelings, either because they are frightened, or angry; they may actually increase your pain instead of helping you, despite their intentions, by saying or doing thoughtless things. You have to understand that their bad reactions are about their fears, not about you.

But there are people out there who can be with you in this horrible time, and will not judge you, or argue with you, or send you to a hospital, or try to talk you out of how badly you feel. They will simply care for you. Find one of them. Now. Use your 24 hours, or your week, and tell someone what's going on with you. It is okay to ask for help. Try:

  • Send an anonymous e-mail to The Samaritans
  • Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
  • Look in the front of your phone book for a crisis line
  • Call a psychotherapist
  • Carefully choose a friend , someone who is likely to listen

But don't give yourself the additional burden of trying to deal with this alone. Just talking about how you got to where you are, releases an awful lot of the pressure, and it might be just the additional coping resource you need to regain your balance.

5

Suicidal feelings are, in and of themselves, traumatic. After they subside, you need to continue caring for yourself. Therapy is a really good idea. So are the various self-help groups available both in your community and on the Internet.

Well, it's been a few minutes and you're still with me. I'm really glad.

Since you have made it this far, you deserve a reward. I think you should reward yourself by giving yourself a gift. The gift you will give yourself is a coping resource. Remember, back up near the top of the page, I said that the idea is to make sure you have more coping resources than you have pain. So let's give you another coping resource, or two, or ten...! until they outnumber your sources of pain.

Now, while this page may have given you some small relief, the best coping resource we can give you is another human being to talk with. If you find someone who wants to listen, and tell them how you are feeling and how you got to this point, you will have increased your coping resources by one. Hopefully the first person you choose won't be the last. There are a lot of people out there who really want to hear from you. It's time to start looking around for one of them.

Now: I'd like you to call someone.

  • Why is it so hard for us to recover from being suicidal? ...while most suicidal people recover and go on, others struggle with suicidal thoughts and feelings for months or even years. Suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • Recovery from grief and loss ...has anyone significant in your life recently died? You would be in good company... many suicidal people have recently suffered a loss.

  • The stigma of suicide that prevents suicidal people from recovering: we are not only fighting our own pain, but the pain that others inflict on us... and that we ourselves add to. Stigma is a huge complicating factor in suicidal feelings.

Eating fruit on an empty stomach -- this opened my eyes

Interesting facts about fruit and fruit juices!!!!

Dr Stephen Mark treats terminal ill cancer patients by "un-orthodox" way and many patients recovered. He believes in natural healing in the body against illnesses. See the article below.

Dear Shereen,
Thanks for the email on fruits and juices. It is one of the strategies to heal cancer. As of late, my success rate in curing cancer is about 80%. Cancer patients shouldn't die. The cure for cancer is already found. It is whether you believe it or not. I am sorry for the hundreds of cancer patients who die under the conventional treatments.
Thanks and God bless.

EATING FRUIT...

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. Guava is also rich in fiber , which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Don't Drink Cold water after a meal. Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.

What is Jock Itch?.................many keep itching but avoid knowing abt it...

What is Jock Itch?
  • What causes the itch?
  • Is this serious?
  • Fighting the fungus

Ever experienced a continuous itch in uncomfortable places? Common as it is, it isn't something that is discussed very frequently. Such an itch can be difficult to handle because scratching isn't usually a comfortable option and could cause some embarassment. Many of us hesitate to seek immediate medical help, often worsening the condition. The fact that we do not usually understand what it is or what causes it only makes things even less comforting.
Tinea Cruris, or Jock Itch as it is commonly known, is a fungal infection of the skin on the groin, inner thighs and the skin in the anal region. It is characterised by a rash near the groin that may spread to the upper thighs and flaky, peeling skin near the genitals. Jock itch is caused by fungi called dermatophytes that thrive in moist, humid conditions and is more common in men, though women, too, can suffer from Tinea Cruris.

What causes the itch?
Dermatophytes are present in our skin. These fungi are kept in check by our bodies most of the time. However, when certain areas in our bodies become moist and prone to a lot of perspiration, the fungi multiply and cause fungal infection. Since we sweat a lot in the groin and inner thigh, these fungi find the region an easy breeding place.
Activities that cause a lot of perspiration make it more favorable for Jock itch to occur. Hence, it is very common among athletic people. However, Jock Itch can occur in almost anyone. The biggest factor favorable for its occurrence is moisture and anybody who does not keep the groin dry and clean is prone to get the fungal infection. Wearing tight or ill-fitting clothes, specially underwear, and not changing them frequently cause Jock Itch. Walking, running or performing other activities where clothes rub against the rash aggravates it, causing more itching.
People who are obese or diabetic are also more prone to developing tinea cruris as are people with weakened immune systems. The itch can also be caused by spread of the fungi from other fungal infections in the body, such as athletic foot. It can also be transmitted from one person to another by sharing of clothes and personal items such as soaps and towels.
While in many cases, the rash comes and goes away, it sometimes lingers on for weeks and months altogether, spreading to the thighs and anal region, causing great discomfort. The infection is characterised by a pink rash with elevated edges, flaking and peeling of the skin in the area and tiny bumps on the hair follicles in the groin region. One may also experience a burning sensation besides the regular itch. All in all, it is extremely discomforting.

Is this serious?
Thankfully, Jock Itch is not very serious and rarely develops complications. However, the longer it is neglected, the longer the fungi will continue to thrive. It is a very common condition and can be treated easily. Too much of scratching may, however, cause bruises and wounds which could then be prone to infection. Given the area in which the rash develops, it can get very uncomfortable specially in the company of other people.
Many of us hesitate to seek immediate medical attention, only allowing the fungal infection to develop all the more. Since Jock Itch is a topic we do not normally talk about, it is only natural that when we do get it, we do not understand what it is. It is a very common infection and easily curable with over-the-counter anti-fungal ointments and soaps. However, it is best to consult a dermatologist or a physician at the earliest.

Fighting the fungus
There are certain measures that can be taken against tinea cruris. If you visit a doctor, you will most probably be prescribed anti-fungal cream, powder or spray. In addition to this, there are various measures you can take to get rid of that fungus and to prevent it.

  • Keep your groin area clean and dry. Bathe regularly, specially after activity that causes perspiration. Use a separate towel for the groin region and inner thighs and make sure you rub them dry after a bath.
  • Take enough protective measures to help your medication: apply your medication, use an anti-fungal soap and change your inner-wear regularly.
  • fWear loose cotton underwear that does not cause a lot of perspiration in the groin region. As long as you are on medication, you may be advised not to wear underwear. Also, stick to loose and light clothing that allow for air circulation so as not to aggravate the rash.
  • Make it a habit not to share personal items such as towels or soap with anyone. Fungal infections spread easily through such objects.
  • Fungal infections in other parts of your body, such as Athlete's Foot, should be treated at the earliest because fungal infections can spread from one part of the body to the other.

Certain simple medication is helpful in getting rid of Tinea Cruris. However, it can recur at any time and can happen to just about anyone. Basic hygiene, comprising of regular bathing and drying combined with wearing clean, comfortable clothes can prevent the occurrence or re-occurrence of Jock Itch and will save you a lot of discomfort, not to mention plausible embarrassment.

SHORT CUTS

2 million men in UK have low testosterone levels
Anew research has found that around two million men in Britain are suffering from low testosterone levels. The condition is associated with a range of symptoms, including reduced sex drive, impotence, loss of energy, depression, weight gain, memory loss, irritability and night sweats. It was previously thought that only two per cent of men over 50 were affected. But new research shows 20% of the 10 million men in the UK over 50 are likely to have Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome, according to Dr Malcolm Carruthers, medical director of the Centre For Men's Health in London's Harley Street.

Cheer up lest you get kidney failure:
Depression, already implicated in cardiac disease, is also a factor in the increased risk of developing kidney failure. Willem Kop, neuropsychologist at the University of Tilburg, the Netherlands, and colleagues studied 5,785 people from four counties across the US for 10 years. They found that depression coincided with the presence of chronic kidney disease and was 20% more common in individuals with kidney disease.

Crave drugs? Then hit the treadmill: A few sessions on the treadmill can curb the craving for drugs like marijuana, says a new study. In a research by Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in the US, 'cannabisdependent' people were selected for the study. They were made to exercise on a treadmill for 10 half-hour sessions over a two-week period. It was found that this curbed their craving for and use of cannabis by more than 50%.

Let us act as matured family man and ensure that women in our families dont get anxiety disorder ....Alok

Women are twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder as men. Find out why and get more facts:

Facts ..

From the time a girl reaches puberty until about the age of 50, she is twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder as a man. Anxiety disorders also occur earlier in women than in men.

Women are also more likely to have multiple psychiatric disorders during their lifetime than men. The most common to co-occur with anxiety is depression.

Differences in brain chemistry may account for at least part of these differences. The brain system involved in the fight-or-flight response is activated more readily in women and stays activated longer than men, partly as a result of the action of estrogen and progesterone.

The neurotransmitter serotonin may also play a role in responsiveness to stress and anxiety. Some evidence suggests that the female brain does not process serotonin as quickly as the male brain. Recent research has found that women are more sensitive to low levels of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), a hormone that organizes stress responses in mammals, making them twice as vulnerable as men to stress-related disorders.

Low serotonin and Depression

Low serotonin levels are believed to be the cause of many cases of mild to severe depression which can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, apathy, fear, feelings ofTaken from: http://www.depression.org/ worthlessness, insomnia and fatigue. The most concrete evidence for the connection between serotonin and depression is the decreased concentrations of serotonin metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissues of depressed people.

If depression arises as a result of a serotonin deficiency then pharmaceutical agents that increase the amount of serotonin in the brain should be helpful in treating depressed patients. Anti-depressant medications increase serotonin levels at the synapse by blocking the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic cell. Anti-depressants are one of the most highly prescribed medications despite the serious side-effects they can cause.

If depression is mild enough it can sometimes be managed without prescribed medications. The most effective way of raising serotonin levels is with vigorous exercise. Studies have shown that serotonin levels are increased with increased activity and the production of serotonin is increased for some days after the activity. This is the safest way of increasing serotonin levels and many other benefits result from regular exercise.

Serotonin levels can also be controlled through the diet. A diet deficient in omega-3 fatty acids may lower brain levels of serotonin and cause depression. Complex carbohydrates raise the level of tryptophan in the brain resulting in a calming effect. Vitamin C is also required for the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin.

Alok adds : If person goes in depression then lot damaging things can happen from affecting a career, relationship.loss of libido and performance, anxities, mismanged anger etc etc.

So go ahead and give and share love, affection, dance, do yoga, aerobics, garba dandiya, outings ( not in a car) like hiking, yatra, outdoor sports etc etc. can help you improve serotonin and thereby keep depression/ anxiety away.

And finally help of genuine spirital gurus like Osho, mental health proffessional, counsellors etc is vital and should be willingly approached or else situation becomes further difficult.

Finally never hesitate in aproaching psychiatrist and take medicine as advised and Lo your life is back on happy tracks.

How can my weight gain be controlled?

How can my weight gain be controlled?

Thursday, 23 December 2010

Answered by: Dr Raksha A. Changappa

Founder & Principal Nutritionist, NUTREWISE Project Consultant, Nutrition & Health Foods Bangalore

Q. I am a 34 years old female undergoing treatment for endometriosis and Lupron injection is being given to me. My weight has increased in folds. Presently I am 185 lbs and am 5 feet tall. Please suggest me a non-vegetarian diet plan to reduce my weight at least by 70-80 lbs in the next four months. I am planning to join gym from next month but I do walk a lot and do a bit of yoga at home. We have treadmill at home and I also run on it. The gynaecologist told me that my weight gain is probably due to the hormone injected and that I must exercise and follow a diet plan.

A. I am not sure what you current weight is, as you have mentioned 185 lbs in one section and 185 kg in another. However, I am assuming that your current weight is 185 lbs or 83.9 kgs.

As per your stated height and weight (5'1" and 83.9 kgs), your BMI is 35.3 kg/m2, whereas your ideal BMI should be between 18.5-23.0 kg/m2. Try and get back to a BMI of under 23.0 kg/m2. This would mean a target weight of 54-55 kgs and a corresponding weight loss of 30 kilos. An intimidating target but you can do it, though you will have to understand that it will take time.

To give you an idea about the rate at which a person can lose weight: an individual with no health problem, who is also not on any prescription medications can lose about 2 kgs (4.4 lbs) to a maximum of 5 kg (11.1 lbs) in one months time. Hence, your requirement of losing 70-80 lbs in 4 months time (that is a weight loss 20 lbs per month) is not practical and would be difficult to achieve considering your current medical problem.

It will help you better if you try and achieve weight loss gradually. Keep small weight loss goals eg try and lose 5 kgs for starters and once you achieve that, keep another 5 kilos as your target and so on, until you near your target weight. The happiness of achieving these mini-weight loss goals will spur you and motivate you to continue with your weight loss plan.

Its difficult to provide a diet chart to any one without knowing details like their 24-hour dietary recall and additional information like food allergies/intolerances, prescription drugs being consumed, work/home schedule and so on. A diet plan which is very general may not give results as per your requirements. Hence, advise you to consider meeting up with a qualified dietitian in person and start with your weight loss plan

Difference Between Fear and Anxiety

Difference Between Fear and Anxiety

fearFear vs Anxiety

Throughout our lives, we experience a variety of different circumstances and situations that result in us experiencing different emotions. Some situations make us experience positive feelings and emotions, such as joy and excitement. At other times, we experience situations and circumstances that bring about feelings of loneliness, loss, sadness, fear and anxiety. Although we eventually recover from these negative emotions, the effects that these situations and circumstances have on us can be so profound that they eventually affect us later on in our lives.

Fear and anxiety often cause very similar symptoms, such as muscle tension, increased heart rate and shortness of breath brought about by the body's flight-or-fight instinct. It is no surprise, then, that for many of us, fear and anxiety pretty much mean the same thing. But where psychologists are concerned, fear and anxiety are two completely different disorders that require different treatment.

Fear is referred to as an emotional response to a situation in which an individual feels threatened. The cause of the threat is realistic in nature. Oftentimes, fear of a particular situation or event is caused by a traumatic event experienced earlier in life. The effects of this traumatic event are carried by the individual throughout his or her life to such an extent that when the individual finds himself or herself in a similar situation, he or she begins to exhibit the symptoms mentioned above.

On the other hand, anxiety is considered to be a psychological disorder where the individual experiences symptoms similar to those experienced by those who face fear-inducing situations or circumstances. The difference between anxiety and fear is that, unlike fear, symptoms leading to anxiety occur even though there is no apparent risk or cause for physical harm. More often than not, the reason the individual feels anxious cannot be pinpointed. This is in stark contrast to fear, where the individual can readily determine the root cause of their fear. Those who suffer from anxiety find themselves helpless and unable to cope with their symptoms to such an extent that that it begins to interfere with their daily activities and interactions with other people. Anxiety is often one of the primary causes of other psychological disorders, such as depression and personality disorders.

Fear, on the other hand, can often cause the individual to become empowered to deal with and overcome this. Because they are able to determine the root cause of their fear, they are able to look into options that will help them overcome their fears and be able to live a normal life.

Johns Hopkins Update - dont useplastic bottles and keep cancer away...

Johns Hopkins Update - Very Good Article

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable
    size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
    person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and
    forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day

and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells
in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7.. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars
and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of
chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor
    destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other
      sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like
NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made
with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute
would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small
     amounts.
Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in
color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer
    cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.
A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat,

like chicken. Meat also contains livestock

antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into
an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live
enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most
vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
    temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
    caffeine
Green tea is a better alternative e and has cancer
fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or
filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it..

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the
intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic
      buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes
to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the
body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system
      (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,
EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy
cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known
to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
      unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior
be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put
the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to
have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy
     life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated
environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to
get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen
therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer
      cells.

1.
No plastic containers in micro

2.
No water bottles in freezer

3.
No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Please share this with your whole email list.........................

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead..
